Reducing resource within any given home is an easy way of reducing environmental impact. Activities such as replacing standard bulbs with LED lights, turning off taps when brushing teeth, and ensuring appliances are fully switched off when not in use are all small initial awareness and habit building steps. Other ways of reducing resource use can be to encourage homes to undertake an energy or resource audit to understand how they are using resources and where this might be reduced without lowering quality of life and also saving money. This can be done through neighbourhood competitions which may be focused on energy or sustainability concerns in the broad through evaluating neighbourhood governance and ecological solid waste management.
Other methods which are being explored include items such as smart meters or smart grids which can help reduce resource waste.
